At Savvy Sleepers, our hearts are heavy as we watch the devastating effects of the fires sweeping through Los Angeles. Both Brittany Longden, our Marketing Director, and Dale Janée, our CEO, share a deep connection to California. Having grown up in Northern California, we have always cherished the beauty, resilience, and community spirit of our home state.
Beyond the physical devastation, one of the most heartbreaking aspects of this tragedy is the toll it’s taking on families and communities. Even more troubling is the price gouging we’ve seen reported in the news. Families who are already struggling to find stability are being met with skyrocketing rental costs, as landlords exploit this vulnerable time.
The LA Times wrote this week about how to protect yourself and the laws against price gouging here.
According to the LA Times, 'If your home was completely destroyed, your insurance company must immediately pay you a minimum of four months’ worth of rent for the local area in which you live.'
This price gouging when people are so in need is a stark contrast to the selfless acts of firefighters, first responders, and volunteers working tirelessly to protect lives and offer support.
The LA Times states, 'You should contact your insurer and start the process as soon as you are in a safe place. More information on dealing with your insurance company, including on issues of rebuilding, can be found here.'
At Savvy Sleepers, we stand in solidarity with all those affected by these fires. For our friends, customers, and fellow Californians navigating this crisis, please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. We urge anyone in a position to help to consider donating to reputable organizations offering relief and assistance. Every small act of kindness makes a difference.
